Stepmothers in Most Fairy Tales
Stepmothers in most fairy tales
Are wicked to stepdaughters.
When they're around it never fails:
They give the meanest orders.
The fairy tales never put
The shoe upon the other foot
And ask how daughters sometimes treat
Stepmothers on this two-way street.

In fairy tales stepdaughters are
Invariably meek.
No matter how the mothers spar
The daughters hardly speak.

In real life daughters sometimes won't
Give stepmothers a chance, and don't
Behave the way they should, as I
Have done to you. (I don't know why.)

In the end, in fairy tales,
The daughter gets the prince.
The jealous mother moans and wails,
Reviled ever since.

And in the end, in our real life,
I'm glad you are my father's wife.
Whatever myths our fancies move,
It feels so good to have your love!
