The Family Pet
When he first became part of the family
We did not know what was in store.
And he looked so appealing and tiny
That we just couldn't show him the door.

So he stayed, and we slowly discovered
Our troubles had only begun,
When we thought he was being disgraceful
He thought he was just having fun.

In his youth he was one for the night life,
But why not? Every lad has his fling.
And despite loud complaints from the neighbours
He insisted on trying to sing.

Now he's grown a bit older and wiser
And is really no trouble at all.
Mum says, he thinks he's our star boarder,
And he's driving her straight up the wall.

He is lying there now, calm and peaceful,
And I know I must tell him to go.
I am sure that he knows I don't want to,
But does he make it easy? Oh no!

He looks at me hurt and reproachful,
When that fails, he hangs on to the mat.
Oh, my Mum sure knew what she was doing
When she told ME to put out the cat!
