The Nightmare
Stalking swiftly through the night
The beast with no name.
A hair raising scream
You hear it eat,
And hope you?ll live to see the day.
A fear like no other
Clawing at you,
Tearing at you from all directions.
The tension in the air
So taut you could cut it
With one swipe of a fingernail.
You?ve been safe so far,
But how long can you run?
How long before it catches you?
Not long at all?
You see it coming towards you.
Turning to run you see there?s no where to go,
You hear the pounding of your heart in your ears,
Feel the beads of sweat roll off your face
Hear the voices and see the faces
of the people you love flash before your eyes.
There?s no where to go but behind you
over the cliff and into thin air.
You?re alone,
But wait not quite!
He hears you breathing
Smells your scent.
You hear him crashing through the forest,
Up turning trees as if
they weighed no more than a tooth pick.
Oh if only you had listened!
If only you had heard!
He?s in the clearing!
Racing towards you like a runaway train,
Steam blaring from his nostrils,
His eyes huge and blood shot.
50ft, 40ft, 30?
Time stands still.
Paralyzed from fear and hunger,
In slow motion,
You turn towards the edge of the cliff?
Only one way out,
One way
And that?s down,
Down,
Down.
Clawing for something to hold on to,
Finding nothing but air,
If only they had stopped you,
But it?s too late now!
You?re falling,
Falling,
Waiting for the sickening thud,
The sharp pain,
And darkness.
Waiting to die?
Why doesn?t it come?
Does falling to your end really take this long?
At least jumping is better than being lunch,
Torn limb by limb in those steel, razor sharp teeth.
Still you fall down,
Down,
Down into darkness.
Waiting to catch you is the fiend!
Jaws opened to reveal
row upon row of blood-stained teeth?
With a gasp you sit upright in your bed.
It?s only been a dream?a nightmare?
Mom? Dad?
No answer.
A chill creeps up your spine?
The blood drains from your face
And every hair on your head stands tall.
The fear is back,
And escape is not a option?
Squeak, squeak.
With a gasp you turn to face the door,
Watching in absolute horror,
The doorknob is moving,
Or is it?
Is this reality?
Or another freakish nightmare?
Nope, this is definitely a nightmare,
A dream within a dream.
Or is it?
You?ve been wrong before,
And with your life on the line,
The stakes pumped up to the max,
You can?t afford to make another error.
If only you had locked the door,
Maybe then you could keep him at bay.
It would take him at least
a minute to break through,
About 30 seconds to catch you and what then?
You have to act now.
In one fluid motion,
You slide off the bed and grab your baseball bat,
The one signed by Derek Jeter himself.
One stride and you?re in front of the door?
Poised and ready to strike out at the first opportunity.
Just breathe.
In one way or another,
You won?t have to hide anymore,
No more worries and no more fears,
You?re ending this tonight.
It?s now or never!
A deep breath and your hand is on the doorknob.
One turn could mean life or death?
You turn the handle slowly,
It?s coldness rippling
through your body like a tidal wave.
A rush of midnight air,
A step,
And you?re in the hallway?
That?s strange,
There?s nothing there?
?Charlie, Charlie?Boo!?
You fall back onto the carpet in a dead faint.
Everything blurs,
But you can hear?
?Um Charlie, Charlie? scared ya didn?t I??
A high pitched giggle and he?s gone,
My little brother,
My nightmare.
